My hands first touched clay when I was ten years old. I enjoyed cleaning the seams of slip-cast ceramics and finding unique ways to finish the bisque surfaces.
I particularly enjoy clay for its plasticity. It is like no other medium I have found. I can sculpt it into three-dimensional forms of whatever I can see, think, or dream.
Simple techniques and finishes are very pleasing to me. Terra sigillata provides a wonderful, yet simple finish to my nature inspired forms that glazes just can't seem to replicate. Burnishing the pieces really brings out the depth of color and gives them a soft, sensous finish.
I am always fascinated by the designs of Mother Nature. On my daily walk through the woods and by the river I stop and observe (and absorb) as much as I can. I frequently bring a sketchbook to capture the essence of the images I see. Later, in the studio, I use my sketches as inspiration to recreate the forms while slightly abstracting them.
My work reflects my love of nature and being outdoors. I hope to inspire people to look at all the beauty that surrounds them.
